Maurice Edu’s move to Glasgow Rangers is all but finalized after MLS agreed to the Scottish club’s $5 million bid. According the the Rangers website, the 22-year-old American international is currently in Glasgow to discuss personal terms and watch the team’s SPL opener against Hearts.
If Edu’s work permit is accepted (and considering his prominent role with the USMNT in the last year, it should be), he will be the third midfielder to join the club this week, along with Pedro Mendes and Aaron Niguez Esclapez. It should be noted that there is also the possibility that Rangers have plans to play him on the back line, as he did for the US in this summer’s Olympics.
Edu is a fantastic young talent, but he’s playing in the US’ deepest position. Perhaps his move to Glasgow will help him make a push for the top of the depth chart. Time will tell…
UPDATE: Edu has agreed to personal terms and his work permit was accepted. He is expected to challenge for a starting central midfield role right away.
