Man of the Match [6.15.09 vs. Italy]: Landon Donovan

We’re going with Landon Donovan as our Man of the Match against Italy. This might seem like the obvious choice since he was the only American…er, the only member of Team USA to find the back of the net, but he really did much more than that yesterday. We often complain that he disappears from games and doesn’t impose his will on matches, but he dictated the Americans’ play yesterday, successfully created chances, drew a penalty fouls, and yes, converted yet another spot kick.

Honorable mentions: Michael Bradley (no yellows!) and Jonathan Spector (how does anyone watch the last two games and not put him ahead of Frankie Hejduk in the pecking order?)

Goat of the Game: Ricardo Clark. Yes, this one is obvious, and yes, the card may have been harsh, but he really shouldn’t have been going in for a tackle like that. Benny Feilhaber really gave him a run for his money in this category.
