Missing names from U-20 squad

Bryan Arguez.  Giuseppe Nazzani.  Vincenzo Bernardo.  Am I the only one who doesn’t think NCAA soccer is a step up from training with professionals and playing in Italian/German youth leagues?  I can’t help but wonder which one of these kids is going to elect to represent another country because of Rongen’s latest snub…

OK.  Maybe that’s taking it too far.  But for the past two U-20 championships, Rongen has sent the very clear message that he would prefer a college starter to a European youth player.  I understand that college soccer is a necessary cog in the American youth development system, and I don’t think playing in the NCAA should preclude a player’s participation in events like this one, but I don’t think the quality of college soccer is as high as Rongen believes.  He stresses the need for first-team soccer, but I wouldn’t rate starting for Maryland any higher than playing for Bologna Primavera.

I’ve said this for a long time:  Rongen needs to go.  I like what Cabrera is doing with the U-17s, and we could definitely use more like him at all levels of youth soccer.
