Onyewu to Fenerbahce – Deal not done

As reported on goal.com, Oguchi Onyewu’s transfer is not yet done.  (Finishing the deal while in South Africa on international duty didn’t make sense and made me skeptical of initial reports.)  According to his agent, the Turkish giants are interested, but Birmingham City, Monaco, and others are still in contention.

Onyewu has shown a lot during the Confederations Cup, especially in tonight’s win over Spain.  The move to Turkey wouldn’t be bad–it’s a step up from Belgium–but I’m hoping his recent form will raise his stock enough to attract some attention from more teams in bigger leagues.

USA vs. Cuba, 23-man roster announced (10/11/08)

The USA announced their roster for the Cuba match, to be played at RFK Stadium on 10/11/08.  With advancement to the next round close to a sure thing, Bradley has taken a few more risks (well…I’d be happy to debate anyone on how “risky” they actually are) and called in some younger players.  I, for one, am most surprised by the inclusion of Jose Francisco Torres.  He’s eligable for both USA and Mexico, and his participation is good news for us.  Good news #2: no EJ!  Come back when you find your form, my friend.

The big, glaring omission is Kenny Cooper.  But let’s not forget–MLS is stupid (at least when it comes to schedules conflicting with international dates).  FC Dallas is still alive in the playoff race and they’re set to play Toronto on the same night as the qualifier.  Could be wrong, but this may have something to do with it.

More commentary to come…
